The team at The Fertility Alliance have taken some time before sharing this very sad news. Abha meant so much to us, both personally and professionally, and we wanted to take the time to find the right words to properly honour her life, her contribution and the legacy she leaves behind.
It is with enormous sadness that we share the news of the passing of our Trustee and dear friend, Professor Abha Maheshwari, who sadly passed away on 3 August 2026 following a long battle with breast cancer.
Abha was an exceptional doctor, researcher, advocate and, above all, a passionate champion for patients.
We had the privilege of working with Abha for many years, initially through Fertility Network UK and later through The Fertility Alliance, where she generously gave her time and expertise as a Trustee. Throughout all of those years, one thing remained constant: patients were at the heart of everything Abha did.
She cared deeply about the experiences of people going through fertility treatment and was a tireless advocate for better, fairer and more compassionate fertility care. She understood not only the clinical complexities of fertility treatment, but also the profound emotional impact it can have on individuals and couples.
As Person Responsible and Lead Consultant at Aberdeen Fertility Centre, Abha made an enormous contribution to the service and to reproductive medicine more widely. She was also involved in numerous research trials, helping to advance understanding and improve treatment and outcomes for future patients.
For us at The Fertility Alliance, Abha brought something very special to her role as a Trustee. She brought her considerable clinical and research expertise, but she also brought compassion, kindness, wisdom and a genuine determination to make a difference. She was always willing to listen, challenge, ask difficult questions and, most importantly, keep the needs and experiences of patients at the centre of the conversation.
Her commitment to improving fertility care extended far beyond her own clinical practice. She understood the importance of listening to lived experience and of bringing patients, clinicians, researchers and organisations together to create meaningful change.
We feel incredibly privileged to have worked alongside Abha and to have had her as part of The Fertility Alliance family. Her contribution to our charity, and to the wider fertility community, has been immense.
Abha leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, through the patients she cared for, the research she contributed to, the colleagues and organisations she supported, and the many people she inspired throughout her career.
Her absence will be deeply felt by all of us.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Abha’s family, friends, colleagues and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.
