Cuts to IVF funding in South Yorkshire

We were deeply disappointed by the decision to reduce funding for IVF in South Yorkshire to just one cycle for those eligible for treatment. Coming just before Christmas, this is a horrible development for anyone needing medical treatment for fertility issues in South Yorkshire, and has left many people feeling absolutely devastated.

We fully appreciate that NHS funding is tight, but those suffering with fertility issues are no less deserving of care than people with any other medical condition – and this decision moves South Yorkshire further away from what NICE recommends which is three full cycles for those under 40. It creates a two-tier system where only those who can afford to pay will be able to receive the recommended treatment.

Our team are working with the professional body in the field, The British Fertility Society, to try to ensure that NICE guidance is followed across the UK, and that everyone has fair access to treatment no matter where they live.

If you live in South Yorkshire, do please write to your MP about this, explaining the impact this will have. Please refer them back to us at The Fertility Alliance and our partners at The British Fertility Society for evidence-based guidance on access to fertility treatment and why this matters.
