Adenomyosis Awareness Month

April is Adenomyosis Awareness Month, aimed at shedding light on this condition and its impact.

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the womb lining grows in the muscle of the womb wall.

Adenomyosis often goes undiagnosed, but symptoms include:

  • Heavy or painful periods
  • Severe menstrual cramps
  • Pelvic pain and pressure throughout the cycle
  • Bloating or a feeling of fullness
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Pain when opening your bowels or passing urine
  • Chronic fatigue

The symptoms can be severe and the pain and fatigue often has an impact on day-to-day life, affecting people’s work and social interactions.

Adenomyosis is more commonly diagnosed in women over the age of 30 and can cause fertility problems. It can affect anyone who has periods and can be diagnosed by an ultrasound or MRI scan, or a laparoscopy (keyhole surgery which gives a picture of the womb)

If you or someone you know is struggling with persistent period pain and heavy bleeding, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice. There are treatments that can help with symptoms.
